His utmost for his highest6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() He then providentially produces a crisis where we have to decide-for or against. He brings us to the place where He asks us to be our utmost for Him and we begin to debate. This happens because we tend to be unresponsive to God’s gentler nudges. But before we choose to follow God’s will, a crisis must develop in our lives. Paul was determined that nothing would stop him from doing exactly what God wanted. “Whether it means life or death-it makes no difference!” (see 1:21). My Unstoppable Determination for His Holiness. I am determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and Him alone. Shut out every other thought and keep yourself before God in this one thing only-my utmost for His highest. ![]() When we think seriously about what it will cost others if we obey the call of Jesus, we tell God He doesn’t know what our obedience will mean. An undue amount of thought and consideration for ourselves is what keeps us from making that decision, although we cover it up with the pretense that it is others we are considering. It is absolute and irrevocable surrender of the will at that point. ![]() It’s as if Paul were saying, “My determined purpose is to be my utmost for His highest-my best for His glory.” To reach that level of determination is a matter of the will, not of debate or of reasoning. ” We will all feel very much ashamed if we do not yield to Jesus the areas of our lives He has asked us to yield to Him. my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed. ![]()

Incompleteness by rebecca goldstein6/12/2023 ![]() The result is a stimulating exploration of both the power and the limitations of the human intellect. ![]() Her philosophical background makes her a sure guide to the underlying ideas, and she brings a novelistic depth of character and atmosphere to her account of the positivist intellectual milieu surrounding Gödel (including a caustic portrait of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein) and to her sympathetic depiction of the logician's tortured psyche, as his relentless search for logical patterns behind life's contingencies gradually darkened into paranoia. Goldstein is an excellent choice for this installment of Norton's Great Discoveries series, which seeks to explain the ways of science to humanists. Postmodernists have appropriated it to undermine science's claims of certainty, objectivity and rationality, but Gödel insisted, to the contrary, that the theorem buttresses a Platonist conception of a transcendent mathematical reality that exists independent of human logic. Incompleteness The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Gödel By: Rebecca Goldstein Narrated by: Tom Perkins Length: 8 hrs and 6 mins 4.6 (12 ratings) Try for 0. ) doesn't quite succeed in explaining the proof's mechanics to lay readers, she does a magnificent job of exploring its rich philosophical implications. ![]() If MacArthur Fellow and Whiting–winning novelist and philosopher Goldstein ( The Mind-Body Problem It's a simple but profound statement, but the technicalities of Gödel's proof are forbidding. The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() My story-loving brain often took a back seat to my academic brain while reading. ![]() What I got, instead, was a book that seemed to know exactly where it wanted to end up but utterly indifferent to how it got there. From "African girl becomes home," I expected the third book to synthesise the material in the previous two, to give some sense of completion and a new, different wholeness. ![]() Binti left her Himba family on Earth in order to travel to Oomza University, far beyond the stars she left Oomza in an attempt to manage her trauma and find herself again in the deserts of her home and there, in the desert, she incorporated new revelations about her history into the anthology of herself, before being shocked into an awareness of impending doom.īut Okorafor has also warned "Don't go into the story expecting specific things because of the label slapped on it" - a warning I should've perhaps taken to include her own description of the trilogy. African girl becomes home." It's a beautiful proposed structure, a Hero's Journey that rings truer for me than Joseph Campbell's, resonating deeply with my experiences of diaspora, roots, and community. Imagined political community6/11/2023 ![]() Anderson, then, defines it as “…an imagined political community” that is imagined in both limitation and sovereignty.Īnderson uses the word imagined to define nation, because he affirms that even the people from a small community, will not know everyone from that community, or meet them or even hear about them. ![]() In order to understand better the concept of nationalism, Anderson starts analyzing the word that is the root of nationalism, which is the word nation. ![]() Anderson suggests that one should not think of nationalism as an ideology like “fascism” or “liberalism”, but to relate it with “kinship” and “religion” in order to understand the similarity that groups of people have and why the territory that they live help one understand the borders that we have nowadays. There has never been a great thinker treating this concept as thoroughly as other concepts. Imagined Communities The concept of nationalism, according to Benedict Anderson, has never been deeply discussed. ![]() Imagined Communities by Benedict Anderson, summary ![]()

The fountains of silence by ruta sepetys6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() That is why I believe placing The Fountains of Silence in children's fiction was more than a strategic move for publishing and marketing purposes it was the author's way to infuse the new generation with knowledge and curiosity because they are the fresh blood, whereby lies the hope of a brighter future with them as protagonists and catalysts. Then I researched this book a bit and, combined with Sepetys' note near the end, my whole viewpoint changed. As a fan of both, I must admit that I went in expecting an adult novel and felt that it was falling short. ![]() An adult reader of historical fiction might view this book at a slightly different angle than a predominantly YA reader. Alas, the author's note at the end supplied me with the keyword: Ruta Sepetys is a "crossover" author, meaning her books are picked up by both teen and adult readers. "At first I could not find the words to express my rating process. A post shared by Caroline // readtotheend (opens in new tab) ![]()
